Mags on the move

My impressions of the ipod touch as an entertainment hub on the go continue to grow more favourable almost daily.

On the back of my re-entry into the retro gaming space this month thanks to the release of the excellent microsoft Game Room, I picked my way through what the retro scene has to offer both online and off.

Here in the UK, retro gamer magazine is king on the newsstand and their forums (@ retrogamer.net) already include a 'game room club'.

However, this and other gaming/tech mags from the same publisher, are also available on itunes via the pixelmags service.

@ £1:19 for the app and the current issue it's a good deal for the full mag. Subsequent issues can be downloaded for £3 which is £2 less than the print and, consequently, the price of a game in game room.

It works well, tap to zoom, pinch to resize, thumbnail bar to flick thru, etc.

So with this, apps like stanza and comixology, it certainly makes Apple look good in the pocket bookcase stakes.

All of this, of course, is wrapped in the snug caveat that any Apple device shackles you permanently to the crack dealer that is itunes and drm.
